Unique and happy-go-lucky jungle animal Hugo passes the time playing tricks on his friends Zig and Zag the monkeys. Then one day he is captured by movie producer Conrad Cupmann and his starlet wife Izabella to feature in their new film. They smuggle him aboard a ship bound for Denmark, but he escapes their clutches and is rescued by the cook, Meatball Charlie. When they reach Copenhagen Charlie donates Hugo to the Zoo, where he makes friends with a young urban fox called Rita. Izabella hires thugs to break into the Zoo and steal Hugo. He escapes and with Rita's help he manages to negotiate the streets of Copenhagen, dodge Izabella's hirelings and finally board a ship bound for his jungle home.
